Imagine that you constantly use two computers, one at home and the other at work. It may be necessary to access some files which are stored on one computer from the other and vice-versa. In this situation, it would be too complicated to set up a FTP server on one PC, because this requires installing a FTP client on the other.

A much better idea for sharing your desired files and folders is by installing Http Explorer. This Windows application is basically a HTTP server, which allows you to access the files stored on your computer from any Internet location, by using any web browser. Thus, you will be able to view your files even from a smartphone or tablet.

After installing the application, the user will first need to define the folders which should be shared and also select the permissions. Optionally, one can add specific users which can access the shared folders and can set up specific permissions for each of them. The next thing to do is to configure the actual program functionality, like setting up the port, configuring IP filters, so that only certain users can access the HTTP server. What's more, specific users can be configured to access the shared folders and one can set up a password for each of them.

After having all these settings configured, the user will just need to click on the Start button for the server to start running. At this point, anybody who enters the IP address or hostname of the computer in the browser will have access to the shared folders. By accessing the Transfers tab of the application, the user will be able to view the users and files which are being transferred in real time and will be able to block any of them.

Pros

It allows you to share your desired files and folders through a HTTP server. Besides that, it allows you to set up users and access levels for the server. Furthermore, it allows you to view file transfers in real time.

Cons

Some options may be more difficult to use by beginners. Using Http Explorer, you can easily turn your PC into an advanced file server, allowing anyone to have access to your shared files and folders.
